Vocento launches a new editorial model for its twelve regional titles

  • This ambitious project is being implemented simultaneously across all the titles of the group, in what is a pioneering initiative in Spain
  • Every day the regional dailies will include a new supplement, "V", which represents a revolution in both format and content
  • At a time of uncertainty surrounding the future of newspapers, Vocento is making a commitment to talent.

Madrid, 25 November 2009.- Vocento today presented its new editorial model for its twelve regional titles, an ambitious project in which over the course of the last two years the editorial teams of El Correo, El Diario Vasco, El Diario Montañés, La Verdad, Ideal, Hoy, Sur, La Rioja, El Norte de Castilla, El Comercio, Las Provincias and La Voz de Cádiz have all worked together in order to increase the local and regional leadership of the brands, based on a creative play which will renew their offer to readers.

The Chief Executive Officer of Vocento, José Manuel Vargas, the Director General of Regional Media, Iñaki Arechabaleta, and the Editorial Director of Regional Media, Bieito Rubido, presented today in Madrid the new editorial model, accompanied by the twelve editors of the dailies, by major advertisers, and by representatives from across the Media sector.

Vocento is launching this initiative at an uncertain time for print newspapers, and is making a strong commitment to the talent of its professionals and to an improvement of its products, which represents a revolution in both form and substance. The new newspapers utilize a more "visual" form of journalism, with a particular focus on design, images, graphics, and on the look of the publication.

Images will no longer just accompany the information but will become a way of providing information as deeply as possible, while there will be a much greater use of graphics, and the text itself will present information from an analytical and considered perspective.

This change in the editorial approach is designed to encourage a more creative, interpretative and authorial journalism, which will lead to better content and which will provide global information from a local perspective, which is an essential element of this type of media.

Each one of the daily newspapers stands out from the competition on every day of the week, while they are being reinvented from Friday to Sunday, based on content which helps their readers to understand and appreciate current events and to plan their leisure time.

One of the main innovations of this relaunch is "V", the new supplement which these newspapers will include from Monday to Sunday, and which will include features from the best journalists of Vocento, who will work exclusively for this publication.

Finally, each section of the newspapers will have its own front page, while the "Society and Culture" section is being relaunched as "Cultures", with the idea of culture assuming the full range of its meanings according to the definition of the Real Academia Española de la Lengua: "the collected ways of life and costumes, and the artistic, scientific, and industrial developments of a time or social group."

Based on these brands, many of which are over one hundred years old, regional multimedia businesses are being constructed, with the regional title being the base for a position which includes a local portal and, in most cases, radio and television stations, as well as an advertising sales agency, and this is enabling Vocento to strengthen its leadership position in major regional markets.

Vocento is a leading multimedia company in Spain, thanks to the strength of its brands, which have a significant presence in all areas of information and entertainment, including the press, supplements, magazines, television, radio, audiovisual production, movie distribution, and the Internet.

The national, regional and local positioning of Vocento, its permanent commitment to innovation, and the strength of its brands, enable the Company to extend its reach beyond its competitors, covering over 24.6 million people, according to the EGM. For more information, go to Vocento.com.
