The early years: 1910-1984

Today’s VOCENTO, S.A. can trace its origins to the newspaper “El Pueblo Vasco” (1910), which was to become “El Correo Español – El Pueblo Vasco” (El Correo). In the mid 1940s, the publishing company of El Correo, Bilbao Editorial, S.A. was established, which in 1948 then acquired a stake in the publisher of El Diario Vasco (Sociedad Vascongada de Publicaciones, S.A.).

The union of the two Basque newspapers (El Correo and Diario Vasco) represented the first step in a strategy that turned the company into a group with a presence in other provinces, based on the acquisition of local newspapers, leading to synergies in content (national and international information, covering events with the same resources, etc.), in the purchase of raw materials, and in the joint sale of advertising space.
