Sur was first published on 3rd March 1937 in Malaga. In 1984 it was bought out by its employees after the State's privatisation of the media and later joined Grupo Correo in 1990.
The readership and circulation shares of Sur are around 60% and 40%, according to OJD figures, making it the most read newspaper in Malaga province.
The main editorial office of the newspaper is located in Malaga, from where its other offices and collaborators are coordinated. There are six editions with different information: Campo de Gibraltar, Marbella-Costa del Sol, Ceuta, Axarquía-Interior, Melilla and Última Edición.
Sur also publishes Sur in English, a free newspaper in the English language with two editions in Andalusia.
