El Diario Montañés was founded on 1st August 1902 and became part of the Grupo Correo in 1984. It is the biggest newspaper in Cantabria with readership and circulation shares of around 80% and 70% respectively, according to OJD figures.
Among the major milestones in its history are the simultaneous awards of the Gold Medal of Santander, the Gold Medal of the Universidad de Cantabria and that of the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo in 2002.
